The Augsburg civil engineer and head of the Holzmann-Bauberatung® expert office, Gerhard Holzmann, began creating and maintaining the construction lexicon in 1999. Over the next 11 years, the collection became so extensive that it became the largest German-language and, above all, free-to-use building encyclopedia on the Internet. As early as 2003, “Das Kleine Baulexikon” reached more than 10,000 Internet users every day, which was remarkable at the time. In 2010, the specialist publisher Schiele & Schön published it as an app for iOS. The Baulexikon 2.0 app was launched in June 2013 with improved graphics and new functions. The building lexicon app has also been available to all users of Android devices since 2013. Towards the end of 2021, the specialist publisher Schiele and Schön said it could no longer meet the technical requirements of the two major app operating systems. From the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025, a large, probably the largest academic publisher in Germany will add “The little construction lexicon” to its ranks.
In this work, the author Gerhard Holzmann shares his experiences in construction consulting with all interested parties, such as professionals, learners and do-it-yourselfers. With a focus on natural building materials and the areas of building ecology, Gerhard Holzmann also explains terms from architectural theory, building and housing law, renovation and damage detection as well as art history, but also technical terms from business administration, briefly and succinctly but also understandably. At the appropriate points, structural numerical tables and tables supplement the facts and terms presented.
“The little construction lexicon” is also constantly being maintained and expanded. Search queries for terms that are not found can be sent to the author and will be added in the respective update cycle if necessary. In this way, “The little construction lexicon” is always up to date.
The app is currently not available online because the specialist publisher Schiele and Schön said they had technical problems with the IOS and Android operating systems and had not been able to overcome them to date. Since January 3, 2024, the specialist publisher Schiele and Schön has been considered liquidated.
We are in the process of developing a new solution, which has been requested repeatedly since the first publications began, in order to be able to continue to offer you this comprehensive work. A large (probably Germany’s largest) scientific publisher has now been involved. Prepare to be surprised, it will definitely be a big deal.
